Rape RecoveryToday, every two minutes, one woman is raped somewhere in the United States. In 2006, 272, 350 victims reported sexual assault…and it’s estimated that 60 percent of sexual assault cases are not reported to the police. One in six will be raped at some time during their lives (Rape, Abuse, & Incest Nat. Network).

Rape is not simply sexually motivated. It is not a crime of passion but a crime of violence and aggression, used as a weapon to intimidate, terrorize, control, and humiliate the rape victim and make her fear for her life. Las Vegas, a city surrounded by legalized prostitution, has 1.18 times more rapes per capita than the national average. If a man needed merely sexual release, it is available to him without the use of violence.

In rape, sex is used to as a weapon to intimidate, control, and humiliate the victim. As a society we cannot afford to tolerate treating rape and the degradation of women as a game. We must be made aware of what rape is and aware of the aftermath suffered by the survivor. Rapists must know that they will without question suffer consequences for their acts.
